Libya: Sirte falls to LNA, Misrata next?

A fresh outbreak of heavy gunfire in Tripoli amid reports that one of Haftar’s chief backers – the United Arab Emirates – was resupplying Haftar forces. Haftar was flanked at the failed Moscow talks by advisers from the UAE.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin, asked on Januaty 11 2020 whether mercenaries known as the Wagner Group, were fighting in Libya, said that if there are Russians in Libya, they are not representing the Russian state, nor are they paid by the state.

The Salafist Madkhali 604th brigade switched sides to back the LNA. On January 6 2020, the important coastal city of Sirte fell to the LNA in less than three hours, prompting suggestions that the neighbouring city of Misrata, critical to the Tripoli government’s survival, will fall next. The LNA forces moved west from Sirte towards Misrata after its victory on Monday.
Salafism in Libya refers to a religious movement that first appeared in the country in the early 1990s. It is best known for its doctrine of absolute loyalty to the ruler, Libyan Salafis today are divided,with “Madkhalis”, so-called because of their loyalty to Sheikh Rabi’ al-Madkhali, being the most prominent group.
