The U.S. Air Force is reported to be expanding an airfield at Guelmim in the southern desert of Morocco, a longtime U.S. ally, from which to operate Predator unmanned aerial vehicles to gather intelligence. In April, U.S. military seemed to have moved into the far southern part of Morocco. For the past two months, dozens of US Air Force (USAF) officers in uniform turned up at the small airport of Guelmim which is mainly used by the Moroccan armed forces.
Guelmim is more than 600 kilometers (360 miles) southwest of the capital Rabat, just north of the Western Sahara and a few dozen kilometers from the Atlantic Coast.
