“we are surrounding the people’s assembly building. We’ll take back what is rightfully ours: Egypt.

A 2008 cable from the American embassy in Tel Aviv reports on a revealing visit to Egypt by Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, The Israelis were ”‘shocked’ by [Presdient Hosni] Mubarak’s aged appearance and slurred speech” but very impressed by Omar Suleiman (spelled “Soliman” in this cable), the inteligence chief who in January 2011 was named vice president. The cable says “the Israelis believe Soliman is likely to serve as at least an interim President if Mubarak dies or is incapacitated” and among potential successors to Mr. Mubarak “there is no question that Israel is most comfortable with the prospect of Omar Soliman.”
