A sailor was severely injured after a cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden was struck by two cruise missiles fired by the Houthis in Yemen, the US military said.
The injured sailor was airlifted to another ship for medical treatment, the US Central Command (CentCom) reported.
It added that crew members were fighting a fire on board the MV Verbena – a Palauan-flagged, Ukrainian-owned, Polish-operated ship.
“The crew abandoned ship and were rescued by USS Philippine Sea and partner forces,” Central Command said. The “Tutor remains in the Red Sea and is slowly taking on water.”

The Houthi had used unmanned surface boats, a number of drones and ballistic missiles to target the ship, which he identified as the Tutor, a Greek-owned bulk carrier. He claimed the ship was seriously damaged and could sink. TUTOR (IMO: 9942627) is a Bulk Carrier and is sailing under the flag of Liberia.

Beyond going after ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, the Houthis, as part of Iran’s broader proxy network that spans the region, have also launched missiles at Israel. The rebels, for instance, participated in Tehran’s massive and unprecedented attack on the country last month. Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi sees domestic political advantage for some of his actions, and he is interested in advancing his reputation across the Middle East through the attacks.

COPENHAGEN, May 2 (Reuters) – Shipping group Maersk (MAERSKb.CO), raised its full-year profit guidance after reporting first-quarter earnings on Thursday, citing strong demand and higher freight rates as ships sail for longer to avoid conflict in the Red Sea.
The company, viewed as a barometer of world trade, said that shipping disruptions caused by Houthi militants’ attacks on vessels in the Red Sea were expected to last at least until the end of the year, adding that growth in demand for container shipping had been stronger than forecast.

The tanker carrying a cargo of Russian naphtha was struck by a missile. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said that the incident happened 60 nautical miles south-east of Aden.

The Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake, near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait were part of scheduled U.S. Navy “accompaniment” for a northbound transit of the Bab el-Mandeb today when they reported seeing explosions close by. The U.S. Navy accompaniment also intercepted multiple projectiles.
The US Navy has now rerouted the ships back to the Gulf of Aden.
